Crossed a turnover threshold, or selling across states? You may be legally required to register for GST. Registering on time keeps you compliant, lets you collect tax, and unlocks input tax credit. Here is who needs it and how the process works.

GST Registration guide showing Rs 40 lakh threshold for goods, Rs 20 lakh for services and the registration timeline on the GST portal

Who must register for GST?

Registration becomes mandatory once your aggregate annual turnover crosses the threshold:

  • Goods: ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in special category states).
  • Services: ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states).

Some businesses must register regardless of turnover, including those making inter-state taxable supplies of goods, e-commerce operators and sellers on platforms, casual taxable persons, those liable to pay tax under reverse charge, and input service distributors.

Why register (even voluntarily)?

A GST registration lets you collect GST from customers, claim input tax credit on your purchases, sell across state lines and on e-commerce platforms, and present your business as compliant to larger clients. Many small businesses register voluntarily for these benefits.

The registration process

  1. Go to the GST portal (gst.gov.in) and complete Part A with your PAN, mobile and email to generate a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
  2. Fill Part B with business details, promoter/partner information, principal place of business, bank account, and upload documents.
  3. Submit and receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) to track status.
  4. After verification (and Aadhaar authentication), the GSTIN is usually issued within about 7 working days. If Aadhaar is not authenticated or physical verification is needed, it can take longer.

Documents you will need

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor/partners/directors
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Proof of business registration or incorporation
  • Address proof of the place of business (electricity bill, rent agreement, etc.)
  • Bank account details (cancelled cheque or statement)
